If you ask Porsche purists what model they dream of owning, many will passionately tell you “the 911 Turbo from the 933 series”. Melding beautiful curves with exhilarating performance, it was the last of the air-cooled Porsches and the last of the handbuilt 911s, making it the last of the true Porsches as far as purists are concerned.
Porsche put special effort into making the 933 series as irresistible as possible because only higher sales would save the carmaker from an impending financial crisis in the early 1990s. Fortunately, Porsche succeeded spectacularly, creating its most celebrated series ever with models of phenomenal quality and performance that sold exceptionally well.
The turbocharged models with all-wheel drive are especially desirable. Their powerful, 3.6-liter horizontally opposed 6-cylinder engines produce 408 (PS) horses that sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds — fast even by today’s heady standards.
Performance figures rival those of the 959 supercar. But the power comes on smoothly with no turbo lag or sudden boost, and there are oodles of torque for practical everyday driving. A six-speed manual transmission puts the power at your command, while electronic engine management squeezes maximum power from every drop of fuel.
Handling is superb thanks to a multi-link suspension that dramatically reduces the snap oversteer of previous generations and a lightweight, 959-style AWD system that improves grip and stability, especially on slippery road surfaces. Highly efficient braking is provided by large disc brakes in 18-inch wheels with hollow spokes and low-profile tires.
While instantly recognizable as a 911, the body is smoother with more integrated headlights and bumpers than in previous models. The rear is also accented with wider wheel arches and a big fixed wing.
The interior is comfortable and relatively quiet with luxurious leather seats and trim. Resembling the interior of the 964 series, it features the same no-nonsense instrument panel but more storage space in the forward compartment.
The silver 1997 Porsche 911 Turbo (993T) with AWD in the photograph was recently acquired at a reasonable price by our dedicated team in Japan. Meticulously cared for down to the galvanized undersides, it brings luxury to the 911 driving experience with its soft leather, sunroof and power amenities.
Only six thousand or so 911 Turbos from the 933 series were ever produced (1995-1998) and examples like this one with solid service histories and low miles are in strong demand around the world.
