1959 Ferrari California Spyder LWB

RM Sotheby’s estimates that a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spyder Competizione going on the block in New York City on December 6 will sell for between $14 and $17 million.

This stunning machine is particularly valuable because it’s one of only eight LWB California Spyders built with an all-aluminum body and it finished fifth overall at Le Mans in 1959.

Ferrari produced fifty 250 California Spyder LWBs between 1957 and 1960 for the North American market, and this high-spec Competizione model features a Tipo 128F engine with triple carburetors that generates an impressive 262.5 bhp at 7,300 rpm. It was raced through the early 1960s, won first place in its class at Pebble Beach in 1983, and is still eligible for vintage racing events such as the Le Mans Classic.

Gooding & Company sold a Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spyder Competizione for 18 million US dollars in 2016, and at least nine Ferraris have been publicly auctioned for between $15 and $18 million since 2011. Of course, new Ferraris are also out of reach for most enthusiasts. They sell for anywhere from $200,000 for a California T to $1.4 million for a LaFerrari.

Fortunately, Ferrari fanatics can find used models that are much less expensive. This is especially true in Japan, where numerous used car dealers and Japanese used car auctions — putting over 150,000 vehicles on auction every week — offer some of the world’s best deals. Japan Car Direct recently had the honor of handling the purchase and export of the following used Ferraris.
