Additional Auction Inspection

The auction sheet grading system focuses more on the cosmetic condition, mileage and age of any vehicle. For example, a 5 year old 911 and a 30 year old kei truck can both receive a condition 4 rating. However, everyone can understand that there is a big difference between two such vehicles that simply a numerical grade can not differentiate.

The goal of an inspection is to confirm what is written on the auction sheet by the seller and auction inspector, as well as obtaining more information that may not be on the auction sheet. You will often see comments on an auction sheet such as, “Interior dirty” or “Oil leak”, and we want to know, “How dirty?” and “From where and how bad?”

We work with 3rd party inspection services that work independently of the auction houses, and JCD staff guides them around the car. JCD does not employ inspectors of its own.

The inspectors call us from the car and we guide them through the vehicle. The inspectors are only allowed to use their 5 senses to detect any issues with a vehicle. The vehicle is not allowed to be driven at the auction house per auction house regulations and the fact that vehicles are parked so tightly to even move a couple inches in most cases. Vehicles are not able to be lifted, nor are OBD read outs or compression test services offered as a part of the inspection service.

We have the inspectors check the engine for any obvious leaks, vibrations or noises. Check for any maintenance stickers. Check the radiator for any leaks. Check for any leaks and the operation of the power steering pump. Check the severity of an accident and quality of repair on an R-rated vehicle. Check for undercarriage rust and corrosion. Check the undercarriage for scuffs and dents. Check the drive shaft and suspension. Check for any leaks from transmission or differentials. Rev the engine and any exhaust leaks or smoke. Check the tires. Check for any brake dust and leaks. Check the trunk for rain water, rust, spare tires and tools. Check the exterior and condition of paint. Check the electronics, including sun roofs, power windows, headlights, wipers, air conditioning, radio, etc. Check for any check lamps. Check the clutch and test shifting the gears in place or the AT for time lag and shock. Check the condition of the interior, including nicotine stains, tobacco smell, rips, burns, stains, loose paneling, missing parts, wear and tear, etc. Check the windshield for chips. Check any modifications made to the car and quality of installation. And finally, we ask the inspectors honest opinion of the vehicle.

We can also request additional photos, video and paint meter readings at houses where available.
